Food, champagne, dancing...staying up past midnight...priceless.
Now it's time for austerity. Something about the excesses of the last month of the year to make me yearn for simplicity and discipline. Enough cake, cookies and wine. My clothes are tighter. I can tell. I have no desire to exercise, and worst of all, all my dance instructors have been off for the last nine days, so I've been pretty sedentary. The stretch from Thanksgiving to New Years is always over-the-top. I have eaten cake for breakfast for the last week, with more for dessert. Cookies from Mom, nuts, chocolate and peanut brittle from Susan, leftovers from all the meals, and my friend Wendy made me a German chocolate cake (of breakfast--with coffee, and dessert--with wine, fame).
I'm actually sick of sweets and alcohol. I feel sluggish and am afraid I may throw a blood clot.
Mark Twain on New Years Day: "Now is the accepted time to make your annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual."
So here are my resolutions:
Exercise at least three times a week. This includes dance lessons. If I don't have lessons three times in the week, I have to go to the gym.
No desserts for the month of January. To help this happen, I took all the desserts in the refrigerator and wrapped them in individual-sized packages, and put them in the freezer. I can enjoy them a bit at a time...after January. I can also take some of them to social dances at the studio, or to work.
No alcohol alone for the month of January. I know I'll drink wine with my folks, and Sandy, Kathie and I are planning on getting together for Hendrick's martinis sometime soon, so I'll drink if eating out (which I rarely do alone) or in company. No pouring a glass of wine when I come in the door in the evening. Instead, I'll make a large water bottle full of Crystal Lite and carry it around with me. It slakes my thirst, and, believe it or not, alleviates the desire for a drink.
That's it. No ending world hunger. I should probably swear off Minesweeper and Free Cell for a while (forever would be even better). I'll keep it as a backup...if I break one of my other resolutions, then I have to get back on the wagon for that resolution, and no Minesweeper or Free Cell for the remainder of the month.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Happy New Year!
