This week's word of the weird is again from The Gilded Tongue, Overly Eloquent Words for Everyday Things, by Rod L. Evans, Ph.D.
The word is "umbratile". Straightforwardly enough, from "umbrare" (to shade), it refers to something that is carried on in seclusion.
I was pretty disappointed to find a couple of internet sources define "umbratile" as "umbratic". Most unhelpful.
Searching "umbratic" wasn't any better until I finally found this at die.net: of or pertaining to the shade or darkness; shadowy; unreal; secluded; retired.
"umbrella", of course comes from the same source.
Then there's "umbrage", "a feeling of anger caused by being offended." I couldn't figure out how it related to the root, until the third definition here: "a feeling of being overshadowed; jealousy of another, as standing in one's light or way."
