It's not exactly the same thing, but "Natural Philosophy" was the 17th century precursor to modern science, physics in particular. One of Isaac Newton's books on the subject was "The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy" (aka "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica"). A great fictionalization of these times is in "The Baroque Cycle" by Neal Stephenson (probably my favorite book ever).
