Last night, Kathie and Sandy and I got together for wine and pizza. And a movie which never even got turned on.
At one point, I mentioned that if I ever win the Lotto, I'll use the money to get a massage every day. Maybe twice a day. That segued into our massage preferences. I was alone in liking firm pressure, verging on the painful.
Kathie asked if I enjoyed Rolfing. I thought she was changing the subject entirely. But no, apparently Rolfing is a type of massage, somewhat akin to torture.
Rolfing, a manipulation technique devised by Dr. Ida Pauline Rolf in the 1950's is supposed to align the body's structures in relationship to gravity. In practice, it involves stretching and manipulating the muscles' fascia, freeing bound up tissues.
According to Wikipedia, "Some people find the experience of Rolfing painful, but Rolfing has continued to evolve over the decades into a practice far more gentle than in its early origins."
For me, it's a new word, but that's about it. But I don't need my massage to be therapeutic or realign my body, or to make any promises beyond the blissful relaxation I know it can deliver.
