When I read that Florida Times Union's food editor, Dan MacDonald and his wife were remodelling their kitchen, I briefly slipped through a time warp to two years ago when I did the same thing.
It's a huge project, particularly if cooking is your therapy, as it is mine. OK, maybe not quite that. But the truth is, I rarely eat out. And even if I'm not fixing anything fancy, I find easier and more pleasant to make some soup or boil some pasta and serve it Alfredo with cream and parmesan and tomato wedges than to order in or eat out.
I think Dan and Judy are the same way. And they know their lives will be hell for a few weeks. There are also those moments when your stomach drops, like when my countertops were installed and there was a >1" gap between the walls and the granite in one corner. Fortunately, I had a savvy contractor who filled the wall out for me (after telling me to call the countertop maker and telling him he had to come remove the granite and replace it with a piece that fit. I didn't do it...the cabinets underneath would never have survived the ordeal).
Eventually, you just learn to live with the chaos. I didn't even eat out much. I ate a lot of sandwiches and cereal. I did cook on the grill and use paper plates a lot. I might have washed a few pots and pans in the shower.
Would I do it all again? You bet. I love my new kitchen.
Dan and Judy will love theirs too. In the meantime, Dan is blogging about the experience. If you are thinking about redoing yours, or just enjoy sharing someone else's pain, check out what he has to say. The picture is from is blog.
