Quirky director Robert Altman died November 20, and there continue to be radio and TV stories about him, so I guess he must have loomed larger than he appeared to in my little sphere.
I was so uninspired by The Player and Prête-à-Porter and some of his other movies that I didn't (and still don't) plan to see A Prairie Home Companion. Those of you who know me know that I am a big NPR fan, and a pretty big Garrison Keillor and PHC fan, so that's saying a lot.
Having said that, I have to give the man his propers for two great movies: MASH, which you've all see, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller, which you probably haven't.
McCabe and Mrs. Miller was filmed in 1971 and starred Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. It was a beautifully filmed sort of anti-western. I remember it having a profound effect on me. (It and Old Yeller, but I digress.)
OK, because of MASH and M&M, I'll give him another chance. Not that he cares, especially now. Anyway, I just added McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Nashville to my Netflix queue. I'll let you know how it goes.
