fragile industries

I recently finished a book about a libriarian on a curious mission, historical in nature, that you may enjoy if you liked The Historian (which I plan to pick up after reading your description):

The Grand Complication, by Allen Kurzweil

Not as diverting and DaVinci-like (I mean that in a good way despite how mediocre I found The DaVinci Code, it was a page-turner) as the book you describe, but interesting in its view of the inner workings of large old libraries, if nothing else.
