I saw King Kong on the TED flight to Las Vegas. I hadn’t seen it before, thinking I knew what there was to know and didn’t think I’d like it. Boy, was I wrong.
Even on an 8”X10” screen, it was a great movie.
One of the best special-effects scenes was the brontosaurus stampede on Skull Island.. Amazing. And, as a dinosaur lover (so to speak), I loved it each time Ann was threatened by an ever-larger raptor. The scenes on the island were fast paced and well done. Good thing Kong was there to help her out.
And thank you, Peter Jackson, who was a writer, director and producer of this movie.
My favorite line was when they first came across one of Kong’s footprints. One of the sailors said “men, only one creature on earth has a footpring like that...The Abominable Snowman.”
Jack Black and Adrian Brody were fine in their rolls, but Naomi Watts and Kong stole the show. She did a great job developing the relationship with the ape as first she entertained him and then realized he cared for her and came to care for him. Quite an acting feat to show such emotion playing against a special effect. She did a great job.
I was reduced to tears at the end as she caressed his thumb on top of the Empire State Building as he was attacked by the planes.
Yes, I sat there in tears sitting between two people who hadn’t watched the movie. Surreal.

Peter Jackson is just the front half (ok, maybe my fraction is a bit off) of the creative whole made up of him and FRAN. She is, according to many we recently saw on the awesome extras of the "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy DVDs, an equally respected "wizard" of film. But, she prefers the background...
