Dan Macdonald, food editor for our local paper writes a column called "Raiding the Fridge", about family, neighbors, work, etc., always with a food theme. Reading his column is almost like reading a good blog...or have I got it backward?
He recently did a post...I mean an article...about getting an iPod for Christmas, and turning into a podcast junky. And what kind of podcasts is a food writer going to listen to? Food podcasts, of course.
Here are his recommendations:
The Restaurant Guys-- The owners of Stage Left in New Brunswick, N.J. host a radio show weekdays from 11 A.M. to noon. Funny and informative, they discuss food topics and the restaurant business in general. The link to their blog will also route you to their podcasts. While you're there (or here), check out "The Meatrix" about the evils of factory farming.
WOR Food Talk with Tyler Florence--If you watch Food TV, you know who Tyler Florence is. This radio show airs (you guessed it Monday through Friday, 11 A.M. to Noon) on WOR, where he discusses food trends and answers callers' questions. Go to the site and check it out, then click on "WOR Podcasting" at the bottom of the column on the left, or go directly from here. Do not pass go.
NPR: food--This weekly show features three or four of the best food stories on NPR and puts them on a podcast examining food from every culture. While you're there, check out all their other food related podcasts. And all the non-food related ones.
Rob Kasper on Food--The Baltimore Sun Columnist discusses a different topic each show. Even though there is no conversation or ad-libbing, Dan says it is very good listening. Good enough for me. Go to the site to download Kasper talking about everything from soup to nuts. (Fine. Be literal. Everything from rutabagas to chicken thighs.)
The Lunch Guys--venturing to fast food restaurants, sampling the latest items and reporting back so you'll know where to go. The site for the Winter Park, Florida denizens says "Think Ebert and Roeper at Quiznos". And, by all means, click on "weekly podcast" if that's what you're there for.
Behind the Bar Show--Mr. Martini does the honors, explaining about various liquors. Hear all about alcohol, cocktails and bars.
Radio Whisky--Discusses the spirits of Scotland, Ireland and America. How can you miss with titles like "Tales of Laphroig". Heck, I'm sitting here with some Glenfiddich close at hand, so I should talk.
Dining on the Vine--a Manhattan couple supplement their web site with a Podcast. Conversational, the show discusses food, wine and life.
Do something new with your iPod!
