Life is good. I just had cookies and coffee for breakfast. I worked yesterday, so I didn't get to the Sunday paper until late, and with my nourishing breakfast, read "Dave Barry''s 2005 Year in Review". (It is actually 10 AM here. I am not eating breakfast at 5 PM. Haven't done that in many years.) I must have laughed out loud at least once for every month.
I have a great deal of respect for Dave Barry. Not many people can build a career around bodily function jokes. And sometimes he is funnier than others. But at his best, he is unmatched, and he is consistently at his best with his Year in Review column. On reflection, it may be because he is give some of the best material imaginable, and he always rises to the occasion.
Thus, it was with some sadness that I read that he will not resume his weekly column. He went on sabbatical at the end of 2004, and just announced that he is not going to restart the column. He will, however, continue to do occasional columns, and will continue to entertain us with his "Holiday Gift Guide" and "Year in Review" columns, which I think are his best. And of course, he has his books and other projects.
Don't be a stranger, Dave!
And if you find yourself jonesing, here is his blog, which he vows to continue.
